PCB Holder with 90mm LED Magnifier Glass and Solde
24 November 2022This is a very solid, well-built unit that is good value for money. The base is cast iron, with a rubber pad on the bottom, providing good stability. The main upright and iron holder mount into the base with thumb screws, and the rest of the components are arranged as required. Double ball joints used for these components provide excellent flexibility for positioning everything exactly as required. The LED lamp takes three AAA batteries. It provides a good light for detail but does not replace the bench lamp. The batteries are a very tight fit and correct use of the supplied removal strap is essential. The compartment lid is firmly secured, but it does not slide out as indicated by the marking: it lifts from the ball-joint side. The mount for the lens is particularly solid, which is important considering its weight, but there is limited lateral movement at the joint. This likely means that the bracket is positioned to locate the lens closer to the operator than is optimal - the main cross-bar for the PCB holder will probably be used in the fully extended position. This also brings the centre of balance further forward, reducing stability. The best working distance for the lens is about 100mm, and this matches the physical arrangement of the holder nicely. The alligator clips for holding the workpiece are particularly solid. They are removable and could be replaced with any fitting that could be secured into a 5mm hole with the thumb screw.
